Ready for the C-Suite?

Writer's picture: Tara Forster SowaTara Forster Sowa

If you’ve come to the point in your career where you feel ready for a C-Suite role, whether it’s in your current organization or not, you may feel some trepidation with the process. After all, it may feel like a huge leap, even if it’s the logical next step. Here are some things to think about:

  • Are you truly qualified? You may think that years of experience are most critical, but demonstrable leadership skills, humility, and resilience are now seen as just as important.

  • What’s the culture? If the role is not in your current organization, do your homework to understand the organization's reputation, why the role is open, and if changes to the culture would be welcome, necessary or achievable.

  • Have you polished your resume? It may have been years since you looked at it; time to refresh it and have a few trusted contacts take a look before you submit it.

  • Are you ready to interview? Be aware that C-Suite level interviews tend to be much more in-depth than those for other senior roles. After all, there is potential for people in these roles to change all aspects of an organization. Get prepared: have concrete examples of your successes memorized and practice telling these stories naturally.
