About the Role

This is an exciting leadership opportunity with a well-established organization in the Sarnia area operating within the real estate, property management, seniors living, healthcare, and development sectors.

The organization is undergoing an important evolution within its finance function, bringing together multiple accounting teams and business divisions under a unified financial leadership structure. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will play a critical role in leading this transition while helping strengthen the organization’s financial reporting, internal controls, team development, and operational efficiency.

This position goes beyond traditional financial reporting responsibilities. The Controller will serve as a trusted business partner to the CFO and senior leadership team, providing financial insight, supporting strategic decision-making, and identifying opportunities to improve processes through technology, automation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The successful candidate will oversee accounting operations across multiple business divisions, manage and mentor a team of accounting professionals, support audit and compliance activities, and ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. They will also help build organizational capacity by developing team members, improving documentation, strengthening controls, and creating a scalable finance function capable of supporting future growth.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead and mentor a multi-level accounting team, providing coaching, development, and succession planning support
* Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting across multiple business divisions
* Ensure compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and regulatory requirements
* Review and approve financial transactions, vendor setups, payroll processes, and related accounting activities
* Prepare and review accruals, reconciliations, and complex accounting entries
* Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis initiatives
* Partner with the CFO on cash flow monitoring, reporting, and financial planning activities
* Assist with year-end audits and liaise with external auditors and advisors
* Identify and implement process improvements, automation initiatives, and technology enhancements
* Strengthen accounting policies, documentation, and internal controls to improve efficiency and reduce risk
* Support management and operational teams with financial reporting and business analysis requirements

Ideal Candidate Profile

* CPA designation is preferred but not mandatory
* 10+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity
* Proven experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or other senior accounting leader
* Strong knowledge of financial reporting, internal controls, and accounting best practices
* Experience leading teams through organizational change, process improvements, or growth initiatives
* Background in real estate, property management, healthcare, seniors living, construction, or related industries is considered an asset
* Experience with Yardi or comparable ERP/accounting systems is preferred
* Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
* Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution
* Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

* Base Salary: $100,000 - $120,000
